Wow! I haven't posted much this Spring, that tells you a bit about my schedule! Things are getting pretty crazy around here as we wind down the school year. As we prepare for final end of the year assessments and EOG testing, please be sure to have your student here at school EVERY day! We appreciate your support!

We will be posting end of the year dates on our website soon for all of our special events. Please check the calendar and plan ahead so you can be involved in as much as possible.

Please encourage your child by ensuring daily homework activities are complete, have him or her here on time every day, and encourage your child to do his or her daily best! We are working hard to see to it that your child learns as much as possible as we buckle down this last nine weeks in preparation for EOGs and final assessments. Thanks for your help!

We will host a family night math on Monday, March 8. This event will be different than any other event we've had here at Ellendale. Our school will be transformed into Pirate Land! We will begin with a FREE family supper in our cafeteria at 5pm. Both students and parents will report to classrooms together for an interactive math session at 6pm. After the session, student who participate will receive a FREE treasure box, full of homework supplies for use at home. Don't miss this fun and exciting night! Also, students, you can dress up in your favorite pirate gear! Black beard himself may also be here! Be sure to save the date!

Our first parent pancake breakfast was held Monday. Our attendance was a little lower than we hoped for but we were experiencing bad weather. Even though we had a small group we received great feedback from the parents in attendance. Please know that your comments and feedback are always welcome! Thank you for your continued support!

Pancakes with the Principal

Monday, Feb. 15 is our first Pancakes with the Principal breakfast. A homemade pancake breakfast will be served at 8am in the school multipurpose room. Please sign in the lobby and receive a visitor's pass when you arrive. This is not a time for parents and students to eat together, but a time for parents to come together over a meal, fellowship, and share ideas on ways we can improve our school. There is no 'program' start time so you can come at any time around 8am until all pancakes are gone! I hope to see you all on Monday! By working together we can ensure Ellendale is the best school we can possibly be!

Haiti Relief

Our school has several projects going on to raise money for Haiti disaster relief. 5th grade students have initiated a lanyard sale. They have handmade lanyards and will be selling those for .25 - .50 once per week for the next few weeks. Also, classes are also having a coin drive to raise money. Each Friday throughout February, students can pay .25 to wear a hat on Hats for Haiti day! All monies raised through these projects will be sent through Samaritin's Purse to help with disaster relief.

Wow. I don't know about you but I am ready for some Spring weather! We have been trying to salvage this week's calendar and make the most out of our short time at school due to our recent bout with bad weather! I know as parents you are also probably ready for your kids to be back in school too! :) This week we will have our school spelling bee on Thursday at 10:30. This event will take place even if we are on a delayed schedule. We have rescheduled winter parent conferences for Thursday, Feb. 11. I hope you are all staying warm and I look forward to seeing you at the Pancakes with the Principal Parent Breakfast on Friday, Feb. 5. The breakfast will begin at 8 am in the multipurpose room. Please sign in and receive a badge in the lobby. If we are on a delay or if there is no school, the breakfast will be rescheduled for sometime in March. Warm winter wishes to you all! I am excited to share with you all the winter events going on over the next few weeks.
Monday, Feb. 1 is school-wide conference night. Teachers will be contacting you directly if a conference is needed. If you wish to set up a conference, contact your child's teacher.
Friday, Feb. 5 is Pancakes with the Principal day! All parents are invited to attend this informal and friendly breakfast. Pancakes will be served at 8am in the multipurpose room. I am eager to hear your feedback regarding ideas you have for Ellendale School.
Thursday, Feb. 11 our students will participate in the Catawba Science Festival. It will take place in our school gym. The programs are always extra special and our kids really enjoy this every year.

Coming soon on Feb. 26 is our school talent show. We hope you will come out and support our students. It is always a fantastic night with excellent performances. I already can't wait!

Happy 2010! I hope you all had a wonderful and blessed Christmas holiday! We are working hard here at school to get back into the groove of things. We have many exciting things coming soon.

Monday, Jan. 11 is our first PTE meeting of 2010. From 5:30 to 6:30 there will be two things in which you can participate. First, we will have a hot dog supper in the cafeteria. Hot dog plates are $4.00 each including a hot dog, chips, drink, and a dessert. To go plates are also available. Also at 5:30, you can visit our school science fair display in the gym. At 6:30, we will have a short PTE business meeting in the gym and will follow with a special Kindergarten student performance. Don't miss it!

Next week we will also be administering mid-year benchmark assessments in all grade levels. These assessments are very important for your child and they provide us with important information regarding how much information your child has mastered at this point in the year. They greatly help us in planning instruction, remediation, and intervention for the 2nd half of the year.

1st Annual Christmas Festival

The festival is this Saturday, 12/12 from 9 - 4pm at the school! Over 30 vendors will be on site selling great Christmas gifts! If you haven't finished your shopping, you don't want to miss this! Be sure to arrive early for the best selection. Breakfast and lunch will be available and you can also have your gifts wrapped while you are here! Admission is $2.00 for adults and there is not cost for students/children. We hope to see you here!

The holiday rush is definitely upon us! This week we had a wonderful week decorating the school Christmas tree in the front lobby. It was a lot of fun. Thanks to PTE for providing refreshments! Students in all grades took part in a school-wide writing assessment on Tuesday. 4th grade is required to do this by the state of NC but we wanted to place a school-wide importance on writing. Students overall performed very well on this assessment. Remember you can send in your cans to be recycled. Also, Friday, 12/11 is an Early Release Day! We dismiss at 12:45. Next week will certainly be a busy week! We hope to see you all on Saturday at the Christmas Festival!

Wow...where have I been? As you can tell from my last post (a whole month ago) that things have been crazy busy here at Ellendale. We have launched new things, held an exciting Family Night, had a restful vacation and are ready to buckle down for the holidays. First, family night was a huge success, in large part to you! Thank you for the hours and hours of work from our parent volunteers! I am so excited about the success of the evening. Check out the pie pictures!
Our Veterans program was also a huge success! We had a gym full of visitors and many veterans who attended our program. We will definitely be making this event an annual tradition. We feel it is very important to emphasize our civic responsibility to honor our veterans for their sacrifice.
We will be having our lockdown practice drills this week on Friday. We will have officers from the sheriff's department on campus Friday during the drill to evaluate our effectiveness and response. It is our goal to keep our students as safe as possible so we will be seeking their feedback on any changes that need to be made to our school safety plans. We will hold a drill during the instructional day, as well as during afternoon dismissal. We will dismiss at 2:30 then practice returning to our lock down locations from our dismissal. We hope to have students ready to dismiss to buses and the car line at our regular 2:45 time. Please be aware that it is possible that our actual dismissal time may be 5 or so minutes late on Friday afternoon.
We are getting ready for our Christmas Festival next Saturday, Dec. 12. Information will be coming home with your child tomorrow. If you would like to volunteer for 2 hours to work during the festival, you can earn free admission. We have over 30 vendors with many great gift items. We will also offer gift wrapping services for a small fee. Come do your shopping with us! Breakfast and lunch will be available! We look forward to a great day.

This has been a busy week at Ellendale! We have been working hard to prepare for family night. I hope you are all planning to attend...it will be so much fun! The classroom plates look so beautiful. 5th grade has also prepared a special quilt. The plates and the quilt will be auctioned at 8pm. Immediately after, we will announce the winner of the pie thrower contest will be announced! I can't wait to see how that turns out! I can't wait to see you all Saturday.

School newsletters went home with students this week along with the calendar for November. I also sent a ethnicity form that the state of NC requires we complete for every child. Please get these forms back to school as soon as possible.

I am excited to invite you to attend our first Veterans Day Assembly. This assembly will take place on Tuesday of next week. Our program will begin at 1:30. If you, your spouse, family member or friend is a veteran, please invite them to be our special guest of honor for this program. We are asking each veteran to arrive at 1pm. The program will be in our school gym.

Wow, where did Oct. go? The year is just flying by us! We are very busy this week preparing for Family Night. We have many special activities planned for this Saturday, Nov. 7 so I hope to see you all there! Dinner will be available from 4 - 7. Games from 5-7. Auction sign-ups will be from 7 - 7:30. The auction will begin at 7:30. During the auction we will auction our annual classroom plates. Also, this year, I am sure you are all excited to see the first ever pie-throwing event, which will also take place during the auction. We are have a coin drive to see who gets to throw the pie. Right now, Mr. Mays has quite a lead on me! I better clean out my change buckets! :) We could use volunteers so if you can help out in any way, please call the front office. We are also still accepting chicken orders and donations for our auction.

Teachers have been very busy the last few weeks closing out the first grading period. Assessments have been given, conferences held, and report cards sent home. I was very pleased with the progress of our students on report cards. Keep encouraging your kids to do their absolute best every day!

Monthly newsletters for the month of Nov will come home this week. Attached you will find an invitation to our first ever Veterans Day Assembly. If you, your spouse, a family member, or friend is a Veteran, please invite him or her to our assembly next week on Tuesday, Nov. 10. Although it has been rainy and dreary outside, there is nothing but fun and excitement going on inside Ellendale Elementary. This week was School Lunch Week so on Friday we celebrated our lunch ladies and thanked them for their hard work in our school cafeteria. This week we had a great turn out, despite continued sickness and bad weather, at our PTE meeting. Mr. Aten's 5th grade and Mrs. Hall's 1st grade won the popsicle parties for the highest classroom attendance.

Just a reminder, this Saturday is the Taylorsville Apple Festival. The first Ellendale student to see me in the crowd will win a free lunch with Mrs. Stout at the local restaurant of his or her choice! It will be a great treat. Remember that all proceeds from the Kids Corner go to Alexander County Schools! I hope to see you all there!

Next week we have Fall Picture makeups on Tuesday, Oct. 27. Report card and conference day is Oct. 29. Conferences will be scheduled from 3-8pm. All next week is Bus Safety Week as well. On Wednesday, Oct. 21 the Ned Show will perform during an afternoon assembly for our students. The purpose of the Ned Show is to spread an anti-drug message. This assembly will gear us up for Red Ribbon Week, which is 10/26 - 10/30.

Happy Friday! I want to thank you all so much for your continued support of our school. It has been such a smooth transition for me as the new principal. I am so blessed to work with such a wonderful staff and such caring and supportive parents.
Now for the good stuff...We have had an awesome week here at EES. We have collected an amazing 3,667 cans of food for the annual Christian Crisis Center Canned Food Drive. That is just amazing for a small school of only 302 students! I am so proud of everyone for this selfless act of giving unto others. I know each and every person who donated food will receive a tremendous blessing!
This week we also participated in Campus Beautification! Our students in grades 3-5 cleaned up the grounds, pulled weeds, planted flowers, and picked up trash. It was a great opportunity for them to take pride and ownership in our school grounds.
I want to remind you all of the Flu Vaccine Clinic coming up in Nov. The clinic will be at Ellendale on Nov. 5. Students in grades 4 and 5 may receive a free flu vaccine with parent consent. Forms were sent home earlier this week. If you want your child to receive this vaccine at school for free, you must return the form by Monday. No vaccines will be given with the form, no exceptions. If you have questions or need another form, call the school office.
Our book fair cranks up next week. Monday is our family book fair event. It will be from 3 - 6 pm in the media center. We also have PTE on Monday night. We will be serving Chik-Fil-A meals at 5:15 and the program will begin in the gym at 6:30. We hope to see you there!

Wow! I can't believe it is officially October! Time does fly! This week was a great one! We were very busy. Our K-3 teachers participated in a training to learn a new assessment method. The DIBELS assessment is a comprehensive assessment that measures early basic literacy skills. We will be administering this assessment to students in grades K-2 and will be sharing these results with parents at the end of this grading period. We feel strongly that this program will give us great information that will help us to better meet your child's individual needs in the area of reading.

Remember that next week is the Alexander County Fair, Campus Beautification and the annual Christian Crisis Center Canned Food Drive.

Campus Beautification Week/Canned Food Drive

Next week, Oct. 5 - 9, we will hold 2 important service project opportunities for our kids.

First, next week is the annual Christian Crisis Center Canned Food Drive. There will be rewards each day next week for the class that brings in the most food. I will offer a special surprise treat for the class that brings in the most food all week. Please allow your child to participate by sending a few cans of food to assist those in need within our community.

Second, next week will be Campus Beautification Week. We will have 2 of these weeks during the year, this one in the Fall and the second in the Spring. Grades 3-5 will be participating in this week and grades K-2 will be responsible for the Spring beautification week. If you would like to donate any items to help 'beautify' our campus, please contact the school office. Items can include: pumpkins or fall outdoor decorations and plants of any kind appropriate for fall planting.

We've had a fabulous fall week here at Ellendale. There are many great things to report! We had a great turn out for K & 1st grade grandparents. We also had a great time with volunteers on Thursday at Volunteer Orientation. If you were unable to make the orientation, you are still welcome to volunteer! Just stop by and visit the front office...we will certainly find a place for you to work!

As you know, there is a lot of media coverage concerning the flu season. Thanks to the health department, students in grades 4-8 will be offered a free flu vaccine. The vaccine clinic will be offered at our school during the first week of November. More information will be coming home soon with your child.

This week, we have had a few students test positive with the flu. We are aggressively cleaning all surfaces of our buildings daily. Please remind your child to wash hands thoroughly, avoid eating and drinking after others, and sneeze/cough in their elbow to keep the spreading of germs to a minimal. Monitor your child for any flu-like symptoms: fever, body aches, chills, headache, sore throat, cough, nausea, or diarrhea. If your child exhibits any of these symptoms, please seek advice from your health care provider. Do not bring your child to school until he or she has been fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medications. We could use donations of hand sanitizer, clorox wipes, and tissues.
We deal with the flu every year. With your help, we can minimize the spread of this common virus. Thank you for your support!

I have decided to update parents via the blog each Friday.

We had a great week this week at EES. The parent turn out at Monday's PTE meeting was amazing. Parents were given some great information on ways to help students in the area of Reading. Mrs. Sprinkle's 4th grade and Mrs. Pennell's 2nd grade were attendance, both having over 70% of their classroom in attendance! They both won a popsicle party!

As you know, we changed Grandparent's Day lunches to breakfast. It was very difficult to get all classes in and out of the cafeteria with a large number of guests at lunch, and it took over 3 weeks to complete this project. By doing breakfast, each grade level could go together and we hoped to include a larger number of grandparents by hosting the event first thing in the morning. IT WORKED BEAUTIFULLY! We had a record turnout for each grade level. We appreciate everyone coming out for Grandparents Breakfast. We have only 2 grade levels left to go...1st grade will be Monday morning and Kindergarten will be Tuesday morning. A big thanks to our cafeteria staff for feeding everyone, to our special events committee for organizing this event, and to all classroom teachers for the special touches they included for our grandparents.

This Saturday's yard sale has been postponed due to weather. The yard sale will now be Saturday, 12/10. We have 36 families signed up to sell so be sure to mark your calendars and come out looking for a bargain!

One more note I want to mention: We have had a lot of tardies and leave earlies. If you child is 15 minutes late or leaves early 15 minutes each week, he or she missed 45 hours of instruction. What a difference that will make on your child's growth for a year. Please do not check your child out early to avoid our car line. If you come at 2:55 you can breeze right through. Please allow your child to be on time and stay the entire instructional day...from bell to bell. Our attendance policy states that when a child has 4 tardies and or leave earlies, he or she will be required to stay after school to make up time. All leave earlies or tardies are counted unexcused unless you provide us with a doctor's note or appointment card. We will be holding monthly makeup sessions for students who owe time. Please avoid this for your child.

PTE Classroom Sessions

Monday, Sept 14 we will have a PTE meeting. The meeting will begin at 6:30 and will feature classroom sessions on literacy. Teachers will be sharing great information with you concerning ways you can help your child at home with reading. We will have Giovanni's pizza meals available for families at 5:30 in the cafeteria. The meal is $4.50 and includes 2 slices of Giovanni's pizza, chips, drinks, and a dessert. The classroom in grade K-2 and 3-5 with the highest parent attendance will receive a popsicle party! We look forward to seeing you all Monday night!

We have heard many exciting things about our new FundFotos program through Carolina Photography. The program will enable you as the parent to log on to a secure EES website and view and purchase pictures of your child at school. As a working parent, I miss a lot of activities my girls participate in at while at school. Teachers will be taking many pictures this year and will be posting them for your view.

The site is secure and only open to the people WE invite. You can also send the link to your family, such as grandparents and aunts/uncles, so they can stay in touch with your child as well.

In order to participate, please fill out the FundFotos form, being sure to include your email address. In about 2 weeks or so, we will send the website invitation via email to the email addresses provided. You simply visit the link and sign up for the program. In order to sign up, you give a minimum donation of $10 to gain access to the site. You get that exact amount back instantly in the form of credits to purchase prints! As a part of your donation, you also get your personal website to store your personal pictures on as well, such as vacation pics. You can purchase your prints from FundFotos and the school will receive a portion of your sales in comission. The prices are very competitive with WalMart and other online photo printing services such as Shutterfly and Snapfish. DO NOT send any money to the school. Money is given directly to FundFotos through a secure online Paypal site.

Fantastic First Day!

Thank you for your support in making yesterday a fanstastic first day! The students had a great day and things moved along very smoothly. Thank you for your patience with our new car tag procedure. We want to ensure all students make it home with the correct adult and mistakes can easily happen in the car line. We appreciate your cooperation!

Wow! How quick summer does fly! We are working hard for the arrival of our students on August 25! There are a few back to school reminders I'd like for you to remember.

First, remember our school supply packs are now for sale. They are $20 and contain all of the supplies requested by our classroom teachers. We have a limited number of these bags available so call the office to have your bag ready for pickup at open house!

Second, class lists will not be published on the front door of the school as year's past. This year, your child will receive a post card by mail with his or her teacher assignment for the upcoming year. You can expect to receive these no later than the week before school starts.

Third, Open House will be held Monday, Aug. 24. We will hold two sessions for parents. You can choose the session that meets the needs of your family. Session one will be from 4:30 - 5:15. Session two will be from 5:30 - 6:15. Bus drivers, day care, and PTE representatives will be available in the front lobby of the school in order to answer any questions you may have. Also, we will be selling Chic-fil-A meals for $4.50 each in the cafeteria from 5-7pm. All proceeds will support various student programs throughout the year so plan to dine with us on this busy night!

Again, we look forward to seeing all students on Tuesday, Aug. 25! Enjoy your final few weeks of summer!

Summer Reading

Let me ask you something: If you want to be the star football player for your team, the prima ballerina in the dance company, or the Olympic gymnast who wins the gold medal......what must you do? PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE! It definitely takes practice to grow at any skill. This includes reading! When students go 2 months and do not read over the summer, valuable skills are lost and students get behind. Be sure to keep your child reading over the summer in order to keep skills sharp! Remember, our school library is open 2 days per week. Students can check out books and take reading counts tests. Stop by to see us on Tuesdays from 9am-12noon and Thursdays from 5pm-8pm. I hope to see you in the library soon!

Back to School Supply Packs

We all stay so busy these days and I don't know about you, but as a parent I dread fighting the WalMart crowds to purchase school supplies for my girls. This year, as a service for parents, we will be creating Back to School Supply Packs. We haven taken the school supply lists for each grade level, and created packs complete with all the items your child will need to be ready to come back to school! We will be selling these at Open House on Monday, Aug 24 for the price of $20 per bag. These packs will include each item your child's teacher has included on each supply list and your child will be completely ready to begin school. This will save you time, money, and stress. All school supplies will be packaged in vinyl drawstring bags with the Ellendale tiger mascot printed on the front. We have a limited number of bags available and are accepting orders for these bags. If you want to preorder a bag for your child, please call the school office and we will take your child's name and grade level. Families who need to purchase more than one bag will receive a $2.00 discount on additional bags purchased. Be sure to preorder your bags now and leave the stress of back to school shopping to us!

Welcome to our new parent/student blog. This blog will serve as a communication forum for all Ellendale families. Blogging is a great way to communicate about various aspects of our school. There are a few things you need to know about this blog:

1. I will update the blog with information about school events and accomplishments weekly. Be sure to bookmark it and check it frequently.
2. Blogging is very easy. You can post anonymously or you can also post by signing up for a free google web account. The account will provide you with a google blogger identity. If you need assistance in figuring out how blogging works, I will be glad to help out!
3. This blog is intended to serve as a positive means of communication. If you have a concern about our school program or a personnel issue, this blog is not an appropriate means of communication for those concerns. Please contact the school receptionist to make an appointment to come in to discuss those concerns with me personally. Our blog moderator reserves the right to take down any negative posts that are harmful to our educational environment, staff, or students.
4. If you allow your student to visit and post to this blog, be sure to go over these blog rules with him or her. Also, be sure to put safe internet use practices into place to protect your child while he or she is using the internet. Literature concerning this topic is available in the school office upon request.
5. Please refrain from posting personally identifying information about yourself, your child, our staff, or other EES families. This includes full names, phone numbers, cell numbers, addresses, etc. We want to be sure you and your family are protected while using this blog!

It is with great excitement that I begin serving this week as the new principal of Ellendale School. Ellendale is truly an exceptional school located in an exceptional community. I feel so honored to be a part of such a wonderful place. I look forward to working with all of you to ensure the best possible education for your child.
